The Kulhad
First dreamed up in collaboration with Diaspora Spice Co., The Kulhad was inspired by the handleless clay cups that have been used for centuries in the Indian subcontinent—simple vessels made to hold a few warm gulps of chai before being tossed, broken and remade. Sana Javeri Kadri, founder of Diaspora Spice Co., shared photos of traditional kulhads from potters near Indian railways, where they’re still thrown “off the hump” and fired by the thousands. Using those images, our team started prototyping by hand on the wheel, refining the shape until we landed on a version that felt just right. We now make The Kulhad in limited quantities in our seasonal glazes.
