For the Love of Guava

A sticky-sweet pink picnic captured on film

I’ve always been a pink person. A few years ago, I thought I should try to mature past my lifelong response to the “What’s your favorite color?” question. I toyed around with orange, and then red, but I always find myself coming back to pink.

When I joined East Fork in 2024, my favorite color was—no surprise here—Rococo. I got a few Rococo hand-me-downs (thanks, Donnie!), and the best day-starter was grabbing that lone pink Side Plate from the stack for my morning toast.

And then Guava came along. I’ve already added Dinner Plates, Everyday Bowls and The Mug to my cabinets so I can get that little spark of pink joy all throughout the day. I have a theory that pink is the only color that looks good with every other color, and adding Guava to the stacks in my cabinets proved that theory.

Guava is the color of those lingering warm days of late summer, and it was screaming to be taken out into the sticky-sweet August heat. I filled some Guava pots with picnic essentials, fun tropical fruits and super-refreshing watermelon granita (recipe below!) and took them out into my yard for a sunny picnic. Before we dug in, I snapped some film photos on my favorite camera to let Guava shine in all its grainy-film glory.

  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp lime juice

  • Cut 1 pound of watermelon into small chunks, discarding the rind, and freeze them.
  • Once frozen, add them to a blender with sugar, lime juice and zest, and blend until liquid.
  • Pour the mixture into a shallow pan and freeze for about 2 hours, breaking up the ice crystals with a fork every half hour.
  • Serve with a sprig of basil or mint for garnish.
